Why does my car idle rough and stall at times?

I understand why you may not want to get to your service center, the unknown can be scary, how much is this going to cost?  But many times this can be a simple fix, a rough idle and stalling can be caused by a vacuum leak which my just be a hose or fitting that can be replaced rather easily and not cost a lot of money. Also if you spend a little now it may save a lot later.
