Why does my car crank a long time before it starts?

Many times this is because the fuel pump check valve is going bad. If this is the case the fuel drains back into the tank when the engine is off and when you try to start the fuel has to be pumped back to the engine and the fuel system has to be charged with pressure for the injector’s to work and the car to start. The repair for this is replacing the fuel pump.
