Good question, your cars ride and stability is for the most part controlled by the struts and shocks, they don’t hold the car up to keep the ride height correct that’s the job of the springs. The shocks and struts stop the springs from bouncing or oscillating they also help keep the car stable on braking. They lose their ability to do this slowly so it’s hard to know by feel when they are going bad but you can bet at 75000 to 100,000 miles it will be time to replace them. You will be surprised by the difference in the ride and control that returns to you car when you replace them.
