My check engine light is on, what do I do now?

There are two ways that light will be on steady or flashing. If it’s on steady you need to get in as soon as you can so we can diagnosis the issue, but it’s usually not a rush. If the light is flashing it needs to be checked now. Many time this can be a miss fire which can cause expensive repair issues in the exhaust, catalytic converters as well as other things, so if it’s flashing get in right away.

My cars power window went down now it won’t go up, what could be wrong?

Most of the time the window regulator cable breaks and the window just drops into the door. The only way to repair this is to replace the regulator, most of the time the regulator comes with a new motor  which is a good idea, because we will have to remove the door panel to get to the regulator, in many cases this is labor intensive so you don’t want to have to go back a year later to replace the motor.

My car has a timing chain, do I need to replace it like a timing belt?

“No” most cars don’t have a scheduled timing chain replacement, there can be reasons to replace the timing chain, they do stretch and will at times make noise your mechanic will let you know if there is any need to replace it. Most cars today have timing belts and they do have a scheduled time for replacement, check with your mechanic or your owners manual.

I jump started my car, still won’t start what could be the problem?

Jump starting cars today can cause more problems then they fix. Today’s cars have many control modules that operate the different systems in your car including the cranking system. Many times a very low voltage condition can damage one of the control modules as well as a voltage spike when you are jumping the car.  Great care must be taken to be sure you have good connections,  positive to positive and negative to the engine block is the best way. And doing this is no guarantee you won’t damage a control module.

Is it important to service my power steering?

As we talked in a resent post, cars are lasting much longer then they did in the past so we are finding things like P/S do need to be serviced. As the steering pump and rack work small particles of metal and debris begin to build up in the fluid and clog the filter screen then the pump will be damaged. Now instead of just a flush we have to replace the pump as well. preventative maintenance goes a long way here.

Why do I need to do all these fluid changes on my car?

Many shops, If they care about you and making your car last 200,000 to 300,000 miles will recommend fluid services and perhaps even more often then the dealer would. Here’s the deal G.M. Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and all the rest are in the business of selling cars, they bring out new models each year to entice you to buy, they don’t want your car to last 300,000 miles.  on the other hand I want to help keep your car safe and going all the way to that 300,000 mile mark or even more. By doing these maintenance items you will save tons of money by not replacing your car and have peace of mind that your car is safe to drive.
