Why does my car crank a long time before it starts?

All cars today are fuel injected so they have an electric fuel pump, many times located in the fuel tank. This fuel pump has a check valve to stop the fuel from flowing back to the tank when the engine is off. If this check valve goes bad the fuel lines drain back, when you start the car the fuel system has to fill up again this is the long crank your feeling.
